Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers and even better at hiding, so an infestation is usually well underway before anyone spots a live bug. The good news: they almost always leave clues. Here are the seven signs we check first on every inspection in Gresham.
1. Bites in lines or clusters
Bed bug bites often appear in rows or small clusters on skin exposed while you sleep — arms, shoulders, neck, and legs. Reactions vary from person to person, so bites alone aren’t proof, but paired with other signs they’re a strong clue.
2. Rust-colored spots on bedding
Tiny reddish-brown or dark spots on sheets, pillowcases, and mattress seams are digested blood. Check the piping and seams of your mattress and box spring first — that’s where activity shows up earliest.
3. Shed skins and eggshells
As bed bugs grow they molt, leaving pale, translucent shed skins. Alongside them you may find tiny white eggs or eggshells wedged into seams, cracks, and screw holes.
4. A sweet, musty odor
Heavier infestations can give off a faint, sweet, musty smell from the bugs’ scent glands. If a room smells “off” near the bed, it’s worth a closer look.
5. Live bugs in the seams
Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, flat, and reddish-brown. Peel back mattress seams and inspect the headboard, bed frame joints, and nearby outlets with a flashlight.
- Small blood smears where you’ve rolled onto a bug
- Dark speckling along mattress piping and box-spring corners
- Activity spreading to nightstands, sofas, and baseboards
What to do if you spot the signs
Don’t start bagging everything or spraying store-bought products — that often scatters bed bugs to new rooms and makes treatment harder. Book a professional inspection. We confirm the problem, map how far it’s spread, and give you a fixed-price plan before any work begins.
