Do You Need to Throw Away Your Mattress for Bed Bugs?

By Bed Bug Solutions Team July 20, 2026 5 min read

It's the first question most people ask when they find bed bugs in the bedroom: does the mattress have to go? The honest answer is usually no — but there are cases where replacing it is the safer, faster call.

Why you often don't need to toss it

Bed bugs live in a mattress — they don't become part of it. Heat treatment and thorough chemical treatment both reach into seams, piping, and tufting well enough to clear an infestation without replacing the mattress itself. A zippered, bed-bug-rated encasement afterward seals in anything missed and stops new activity from getting through.

When replacement makes more sense

Some situations tip the decision toward a new mattress instead:

  • The mattress is already old, sagging, or due for replacement anyway
  • Damage or staining from a heavy, long-running infestation
  • You want a fresh start rather than living with a treated mattress, even a clean one

If you do get rid of it, do it safely

Dragging an infested mattress through hallways and stairwells is one of the most common ways bed bugs spread to neighboring apartments and units — see our guide on renter rights and responsibilities if you're in a multi-unit building. Wrap the mattress in plastic and seal it before moving it, and mark it clearly so it isn't picked up by someone else along the way.

Either way, treat the room first

Replacing the mattress without treating the rest of the room just gives bed bugs a new mattress to move into. Bed frames, baseboards, and nearby furniture need to be cleared first — that's true whether you keep the original mattress or bring in a new one.
